News:  What did we learn? (Pre-season Game #1)

Fantasy Football Slant:
The first game is in the bag, a 16-10 loss to the Steelers. Obviously the outcome doesn't matter. Rather, it's the performances of the individual players that will help gauge their worth from a fantasy standpoint in 2008.

Shawn Andrews' Depression
Clearly, it was depressing that Andrews chose to skip the first few weeks of camp before announcing his issue. He's finally back in camp, but he's not practicing yet and no timeline has been announced. Andrews is a Pro-Bowl caliber RG and is a big part of the reason the Eagles offense runs the ball so well. The good news is that Max Jean-Gilles has really produced in Andrews' stead thus far and acquitted himself nicely in the game against the Steelers. If Andrews comes back and can play at a high level, then this is a win-win for the Eagles. If not, the Eagles still appear to be in fine shape with Jean-Gilles replacing Andrews.

Is McNabb Back?
How well the team does this year will be almost completely dependent upon the play of McNabb. So far, things look good. Aside from a minor bout with shoulder tendonitis, he's been healthy and practicing well. He looked great in the pre-season game, throwing the ball into tight quarters (something he's been unwillng to do in the past) and his timing on crossing routes (especially one to Greg Lewis) looked excellent. He appears to have good mobility in the pocket and his arm looks good too. Don't overdraft McNabb, as many often do, but consider him as a starting-quality FF QB for the 2008 season.

Mismatches on Offense
The mantra of the Eagles offense all off-season has been their desire to create mismatches with speedy newcomers Lorenzo Booker, DeSean Jackson, and Kris Wilson. Booker looked like a mini-Westbrook, showing speed and versatility. Jackson made some very nice catches and showed that he should be able to contribute on offense more than might be expected, especially if Reggie Brown continues to underimpress. Wilson might find it hard to crack the lineup with LJ Smith and Brent Celek ahead of him, but he was able to stretch the field late in the game (the ball went incomplete). If your league scoring benefits special teamers, then Jackson and Booker might be a couple sleepers to watch.

Green Akers
David Akers was pretty close to horrendous in 2007. His lack of leg strength was evident as his kickoffs were landing around the 10 or 15 yard line and his FG percentage over 40 yards was terrible. But Akers has trained differently this off-season and is booming the ball again. His opening kickoff landed deep in the endzone and bounced right through. His only FG attempt was a 28 yarder, but he's had his best camp in many, many years. His leg strength is back and Akers is a solid FF prospect once again.

Where's the Deef?
The Eagles defense was very confident coming into 2008. They had a LOT of depth in the secondary, the LB corps was young and fast and really came on at the end of 2007, and the defensive line looked more dominant than in past years. Now they've lost Victor Abiamiri for at least part of the season (he was likely to earn a starting role opposite Trent Cole). Asante Samuel is battling injuries. In the game against Pittsburgh, Big Ben read a corner blitz and correctly connected with the open receiver (Santonio Holmes) who made Brian Dawkins look old and silly (though the blitz wasn't disguised well). The good news is that Quintin Mikell looked great and rookie Trevor Laws looks like he can contribute immediately. They should still be a starting FF defense, but they didn't look impressive against Pittsburgh.

Remember Jerome McDougle?
The Eagles traded up to get McDougle in the 2003 draft. He underimpressed his first two years in the league and then got shot in a robbery attempt and missed all of 2005. He spent all of 2007 on IR as well. It was a surprise that he even held onto a roster spot entering 2008, but he's impressing in camp and played relatively well against the Steelers. Can he help this defense? At this point, I think the Eagles should dangle him as trade bait to the Vikes who are desperate for some D-line depth. Otherwise, he's got a decent shot at making the team once again, especially if Abiamiri is going to miss extended time.

News:  2008-09 Camp Opens! (Part 2 of 2)

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Eagles defense will look a bit different than a year ago. The Eagles came to terms with rookie DT Trevor Laws--the last of the Eagles' rookies to sign--in time for the first training camp practices today. Some free agent additions will help improve the defense and make it a top 10 fantasy performer in 2008.

The defensive line has struggled to maintain their priduction into the second half of the season for the past couple years. Lack of depth and undersized players resulted in offenses taking advantage of worn-out and physically beaten players recently. That should change this year as the Eagles finally have depth. The interior line will be manned, once again, by Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley. Both should continue to improve. Depth is provided in rookie Trevor Laws, a big motor player who can be disruptive. The Eagles also move newly added DT Dan Klecko (who was signed in the spring as a fullback) to the mix. On the outside, Trent Cole has been one to the league sack leaders the past couple years, but tired as the season wore on. He'll be assisted by productive role player Juqua Parker and free agent pass-rush specialist Chris Clemons. The Eagles might also end up starting 2nd-year player Victor Abiamiri if he impresses in training camp. Rookie Bryan Smith has the speed to get to the QB from the edge in passing situations.

The linebacking corps has been a big question mark in recent years, but it now appears that the Eagles have a young, exciting group in place. Second-year guy Stewart Bradley will man the middle and impressed late in the 2007 season. On the outside the Eagles have the versatile Omar Gaither and the markedly improved Chris Gocong. They also have some depth with free agent acquisition Rocky Boiman and some other young players.

The defensive backfield will be getting all of the attention with the stalwart Brian Dawkins returning to improve on a disappointing season. Because of some personal issues in the 2007 offseason, he was never able to get in shape and stay healthy last season. He's ready to roll in 2008. The big addition to the backfield was free agent CB Asante Samuel, who will man the LCB position. This displaces Pro-Bowl CB Lito Sheppard, relegating him to either the RCB or nickel position with Sheldon Brown. The Eagles still have some issues at SS with Quintin Mikell the likely starter (he's an excellent back-up and special teamer) and former Iowa teammates Sean Considine and Marcus Paschal battling for a backup role. The Eagles also drafted their future starter at FS in Quintin Demps, an exciting player who could impress as early as this fall.

Special teams are led, once again, by kicker David Akers. He really struggled outside of 40 yards last season and will need to show improved leg strength in camp before earning a draftable grade. Australian import Sav Rocca appears to be the punter once again, despite his 2007 inconsistency. The excitement for Eagles fans this year is the addition of DeSean Jackson as their return man. He's electric and could make things happen for a team that hasn't had a decent returner (aside from Brian Westbrook's rare appearances as a PR) since Brian Mitchell's career wound down.

The Eagles feature a smallish, fast defense that bears some similarity to the one in Indianapolis. If they can sustain a pass-rush throughout the season, they'll be one of the top fantasy defenses in the league. The special teams might finally provide owners some points on returns with DeSean Jackson in the fold.

News:  2008-09 Camp Opens!

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Philadelphia Eagles begin the 2008 training camp with a lot of optimism, some consternation, and plenty of questions. The good news is that all but one rookie is signed, and there's no indication that the final signing should take too long.

Today we'll look at the offensive side of the ball. The Eagles hope to be even more dangerous than a year ago as some key players are recovered from injuries (serious and nagging) and they've added some wrinkles (and players) to make the offense more explosive.

At QB, the big question is what to expect from #5. McNabb is fully recovered from his leg injuries that slowed him much of 2007. The big question is whether his shoulder will hold up (he's already been shut down once this spring for tendonitis). Behind him is 2nd-year player Kevin Kolb who has leapfrogged AJ Feeley, who always seems to perform well (minus the costly INTs) in Andy Reid's offense.

The backfield will be led by all-everything back Brian Westbrook. Westbrook has made it known that he is not happy with his contract and has even hinted at a holdout (which appears to be unlikely). Behind him, 2nd-year back Lorenzo Booker has many of the same skills as Westbrook and should help improve the depth. Another 2nd-year back, Tony Hunt, showed well in limited 2007 opportunities and will battle Correll Buckhalter and Ryan Moats for roster spots.

The wideout position was one that fans clamored for the Eagles to upgrade. In the 2nd round of the draft, the Eagles selected DeSean Jackson, although he will likely have more of an impact on kick and punt returns than the offense early on. Kevin Curtis had an excellent first season in the Eagles offense and is the #1 guy. Reggie Brown was an adequate #2, but played much of the season hurt, as did potential #3 guy, Jason Avant. The final WR will likely come down to a battle between the big Hank Baskett and the experienced Greg Lewis. Overall, the team should be marginally improved at this position.

At tight end, the Eagles used their franchise tag on LJ Smith and expect him, now healthy, to perform up to expectations. They also added the dangerous Kris Wilson as a free agent from Kansas City. Wilson is an excellent receiver who can stretch the field. They also have Brent Celek, a 2nd-year player with lots of promise and the experienced Matt Schobel as depth. The tight end position will need to improve its production in 2008 and appears likely to do so.

The biggest questions will be on the offensive line. The Eagles are old on the outside with LT William Thomas and RT Jon Runyan. Both are nearing the end and Thomas has become injury prone in the past couple years. Both can play at a high level when healthy. The RG position is manned by All-Pro Shawn Andrews and the center position will once again be handled by Jamaal Jackson, a player who played very well in 2006, but fell off substantially in 2007. One training camp battle to watch will be LG where last year's starter, Todd Herremans, will battle 3rd-year pro Max Jean-Gilles for the starting role. The Eagles really need much better play from their interior line to allow their explosive offense to click. They also need to develop depth at the tackle positions, something that might become a major priority with two first round picks in 2009.

The Eagles offense should be more explosive than 2007 with the addition of players like Lorenzo Booker, DeSean Jackson, and Kris Wilson. If they can balance their runs and passes, they could be a very fantasy-friendly offense with a stud (Westbrook), some solid starting players (Curtis, McNabb, Smith, Brown), and a couple sleeper candidates (Booker, Avant).

Tomorrow we'll look at the defense and special teams.

News:  Eagles Active in Free Agency

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Eagles jumped into free agency in a big way, signing the top defensive player available in CB Asante Samuel immediately after free agency opened. They immediately named him the starter at LCB (where 2x Pro-Bowler Lito Sheppard had been entrenched). The Eagles are now fielding calls from other teams interested in trading for Sheppard. If those talks don't come to fruition, look for Lito to move to RCB and Sheldon Brown move to either nickel back or strong safety.

The Eagles also signed DE/OLB Chris Clemons away from the Raiders. Clemons racked up 8 sacks in limited duty in 2007 and should become part of the rotation at DE for the Eagles who desperately needed more pressure from the DE position.

While the Eagles keep denying that they need an upgrade at WR, they did make a significant contract offer to Randy Moss before he returned to the Pats (for less guaranteed money). There were also rumors that the Eagles made offers to Arizona for Larry Fitzgerald (since re-signed with the Cards) and with Detroit for Roy Williams. While nothing has happened yet, the mere fact that the Eagles are inquiring about WRs indicates that they recognize that an upgrade is needed.

Look for the Eagles continue to try to improve their team through free agency (less likely) or trades (more likely) between now and the draft. The Eagles stand to make out well with compensatory picks so they may be willing to move some of their other picks around to improve the team.

News:  Eagles Give TE L.J. Smith the Franchise Tag

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Eagles wasted no time in placing the franchise tag on beleagured TE L.J. Smith. Smith has been a perennial underachiever, dropping catchable balls and fumbling away opportunities on the field... that's when he is actually on the field. He's spent quite a bit of time in the trainer's room the past few years with nagging little injuries that seem to take too long to heal.

Look for L.J. Smith to sign his tender (none of the other teams will be willing to pay the two first round picks necessary to sign him away from the Eagles) and play one more year with the Eagles. Despite the fact that it will be a contract year for him, his fantasy value shouldn't be too high. Remember that 2007 was a contract year too, and he spent a lot of it on the bench with injuries. The Eagles will probably look to get Brent Celek some more experience next year as well.

News:  Eagles Week Seventeen Fantasy-Specific Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Eagles are looking to end the season with three straight victories and head into 2008 with on a positive note. The first thing everyone wants to know is whether the rook, Kevin Kolb, will be behind center in this meaningless game. Unfortunately, the answer is no. Donovan McNabb will be your starter and your likely finisher unless one of the teams is up significantly in the fourth quarter, and then it would be AJ Feeley getting the mop-up work. If you're still battling for a fantasy win, the Eagles have some players worth considering this week despite the fact that neither the Bills nor the Eagles are playing for anything but pride at this point.

Quarterbacks
Donovan McNABB: (Low #1) McNabb has been playing well once again and appears to be fully recovered from his laundry list of injuries. He's still got plenty to play for as it's still possible that he will have a new uni in 2008.
Kevin KOLB: (Bench) Unlikely to see any PT at all.
A.J. FEELEY: (Bench) He's still the #2 QB on the Eagles roster, but don't even bother at this point. He's thrown 8 picks in just over two games' worth of action this year.

Halfbacks
Brian WESTBROOK: (#1) The amazing thing isn't so much the production, but the fact that he's continued to do everything for the team that isn't even giving him a weekly paycheck this year.
Correll Buckhalter: (Low #3) He had a nice TD scamper last week and should continue to get a few carries. He might be OK as a flex consideration this week.
Tony Hunt: (Bench) I thought he'd get a few more carries, but he's still MIA.
Thomas TAPEH: (Bench) Tapeh is primarily a blocker and will have very limited touches.

Wideouts
Reggie BROWN: (Low #2) Brown had a terrible first quarter of the season, but has been playing much better in the final quarter.
Kevin CURTIS: (#2) Curtis found the end zone last week (although it was just his second TD since game #5) and is getting the bulk of the catches and yards.
Hank BASKETT: (Bench) He's been doing a lot more blocking than catching.
Jason AVANT: (Bench) He's getting a few looks, but not enough to excite.
Greg LEWIS: (#5) He just won't go away despite Eagles' fans' wishes.

Tight Ends
L.J. SMITH: (Bench) So much for a contract year performance. He might return for the finale, but don't expect much.
Brent CELEK: (#2) He's made the most of his chances, but needs to get some more passes thrown his way.
Matt SCHOBEL: (Bench) He might return from the (cheap-shot) concussion he received against the Cowboys, but I wouldn't consider him in even the deepest of deep leagues.

Kicker
David AKERS: (#2) Would you believe that he's made only 2 FGs more than 40 yards? Only Vinatieri has been worse!

Defense/Special Teams
Team Defense/Special Teams: (#1) The Eagles defense has played fairly well this season, in spite of the numerous injuries. Don't expect them to lay down for Buffalo. The return team has actually been doing better of late too. Could this be the week that JR Reed takes a KO back for a TD?
IDP DL: Trent COLE has had a Pro Bowl type of season, even if voters disagreed. He's still getting pressure on the QB and can play the run too. He's a #1 starter on the DL.
IDP LB: Stewart BRADLEY got his first start of the season last week with Spikes on the IR and he played an outstanding game. He's playing for a starting spot next year, so give him a shot now.
IDP DB: Sheldon BROWN has played consistently well all season and Lito SHEPPARD is mostly healthy and playing quite well too. The safeties are a bit too inconsistent for consideration now with Dawkins out.

Prediction:
Buffalo 10
EAGLES 31

News:  Eagles Week Thirteen Fantasy-Specific Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
After a heckuva performance against a team for the ages in the Pats Monday night, the Eagles look to get back into the playoff hunt against Seattle. Despite any indecision by Coach Reid at this point, it appears that AJ Feeley is destined for at least another start. The team seems to play better for any QB not named Donovan, so give AJ a shot if you're desperate.

Quarterbacks
Donovan McNABB: (Bench) Ankle and thumb injuries should keep him in civvies for at least another week.
Kevin KOLB: (Bench) Unlikely to see any significant playing time.
A.J. FEELEY: (#2) He produced nicely against the Pats. He won't do as well this week, but should still be OK.

Halfbacks
Brian WESTBROOK: (#1) Not as much yardage last week, but he got to the endzone. Keep riding him.
Correll BUCKHALTER: (Low #3) Westbrook is still missing practices, so it's possible that CBuck gets some carries.
Tony HUNT: (Bench) Not worth consideration at this point.
Thomas TAPEH: (Bench) Tapeh is primarily a blocker and will have very limited touches.

Wideouts
Reggie BROWN: (Low #2) Brown has been better in the second half of the season, but is still inconsistent.
Kevin CURTIS: (Low #2) Curtis is stil getting the most looks in the offense.
Hank BASKETT: (#5) He's due to find the endzone sometime this season.
Jason AVANT: (Bench) Avant isn't a serious contributor in this offense at this time.
Greg LEWIS: (Bench) Two TDs? Can you spell a-b-e-r-r-a-t-i-o-n?

Tight Ends
L.J. SMITH: (Low #1) Look for Smith to get a few catches this week... a TD could happen too.
Brent CELEK: (Bench) The return of Smith has limited his chances.
Matt SCHOBEL: (Bench) A catch here; a catch there... not worth using.

Kicker
David AKERS: (#1) He's been solid, but not spectacular, this season.

Defense/Special Teams
Team Defense/Special Teams: (#2) The Eagles might give up some big passing yardage this week, but should control Maurice Morris well enough. I don't see them giving up a ton of points, but they haven't been getting the turnovers to help owners.
IDP DL: Trent COLE and Juqua THOMAS are continuing to get some pressure on QBs and both can stop the run.
IDP LB: Takeo SPIKES took a backseat to Gocong and Gaither recently, but he's still the only stud of the group.
IDP DB: Sheldon BROWN is the only player who has been consistent in the defensive secondary for the Birds.

Prediction:
Seahawks 17

News:  Week 12 Update

Fantasy Football Slant:
It looks more and more like McNabb will not play against the Pats. His sprained ankle is progressing well, but his injured thumb is still preventing him from gripping the ball. If you like to live on the edge, A.J. Feeley will likely get the start (don't look for Kevin Kolb). I'd recommend that owners avoid all Philly QBs this weekend.

News:  Eagles Week Twelve Fantasy-Specific Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
Just a couple years ago, the Eagles faced the Patriots in the Super Bowl, and took them to the limit. Now the Eagles are a 23+ point underdog in a regular season game, the largest point spread ever not involving an expansion team. Making things worse for the Eagles is the uncertainty at the QB position. McNabb has a sprained ankle and an injured thumb. My guess is that he will try to play, although I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't finish the game. The Eagles want to avoid controversy, and if AJ Feeley (or even worse, Kevin Kolb) were to start and keep the Eagles competitive, they'd have an out-and-out QB controversy on their hands.

Quarterbacks
Donovan McNABB: (Bench) He's injured and not likely to do much even if healthy enough to play. Stay away.
A.J. FEELEY: (Bench) He'll get the start if McNabb is unable to go, but will not help fantasy owners.
Kevin KOLB: (Bench) Unlikely to see any significant playing time.

Halfbacks
Brian WESTBROOK: (#1) Yes, he's that good... even against the Pats.
Correll BUCKHALTER: (#4) If you used him last week, he rewarded you with a TD. No such luck this week.
Tony HUNT: (Bench) He hasn't even been dressing for the games.
Thomas TAPEH: (Bench) Tapeh is primarily a blocker and will have very limited touches.

Wideouts
Reggie BROWN: (High #3) The Eagles will probably need to air it out, so he might be worth a start.
Kevin CURTIS: (#3) He could get some catches, but not enough to help fantasy owners.
Hank BASKETT: (Low #4) He's still getting looks, but isn't finding the end zone.
Jason AVANT: (#5) He got a TD last week, but has been very quiet otherwise.
Greg LEWIS: (Bench) He's still on the team?

Tight Ends
L.J. SMITH: (#2) He might spend more time blocking than receiving this week.
Brent CELEK: (#3) He could sneak a few catches past the Pats this week.
Matt SCHOBEL: (Bench) Don't bother.

Kicker
David AKERS: (#1) Akers could get a FG or two... he's still starting material.

Defense/Special Teams
Team Defense/Special Teams: (Bench) The Eagles are 23 point underdogs. Need I say more?
IDP DL: Trent COLE has hit his slower portion of the season, where he shows how much he's worn down. Juqua THOMAS is starting to get to the part of the season where he shows up and plays well, so give him a shot if you need a lineman.
IDP LB: Takeo SPIKES should be a busy guy this weekend, taking a pounding from Eckel and Evans.
IDP DB: Quintin MIKELL is hurt now, so don't use him. Sheldon BROWN might be your best option at DB.

Prediction:
EAGLES 16
Patriots 44

News:  Eagles Week Eleven Fantasy-Specific Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Eagles have an interesting match-up on hand with the Dolphins. Everything points to an Eagles win in this one. Miami is still winless and is turning to their 26-year-old rookie QB and has allowed teams to score almost at will on them. The Eagles are coming off a come-from-behind win against a divisional opponent that kept their slim playoff hopes alive, and a win this week gets them a game closer to a wild card as either the Giants or Lions will lose their game this weekend. The problem for the Eagles may be the health of their star RB. Brian Westbrook missed practice on Thursday to rest a sore knee. He will probably not go full out (if at all) on Friday either. For you Westbrook owners, don't worry, he'll still be playing on Sunday, although he might be spelled a bit more often and see an early exit if the Eagles open up a large lead.

Quarterbacks
Donovan McNABB: (Low #1) McNabb produced nicely for you last week, so keep riding him. He may not throw 4 TDs again, but he should be solid.
Kevin KOLB: (Bench) Unlikely to see any significant playing time.
A.J. FEELEY: (Bench) Unlikely to see any game action.

Halfbacks
Brian WESTBROOK: (#1) He still has to be started, although he might produce a bit less with his sore knee and the possibility of a quicker exit.
Correll BUCKHALTER: (#3) If you've been ravished by injuries and need to take a shot, this might be the week for Buck.
Tony HUNT: (Bench) After scoring a TD earlier in the year, he's been relegated to the bench lately. Keep him there.
Thomas TAPEH: (Bench) Tapeh is primarily a blocker and will have very limited touches.

Wideouts
Reggie BROWN: (#2) Brown found the endzone on a circus catch last week and seems to have emerged as the Eagles #1 WR.
Kevin CURTIS: (Low #2) Curtis is still the Eagles most dangerous deep threat, and he gets plenty of looks.
Hank BASKETT: (Low #4) Baskett moved the chains with each of his three short catches, but the return of the TE doesn't help him.
Jason AVANT: (Bench) Avant isn't a serious contributor in this offense at this time.
Greg LEWIS: (Bench) G-Lew shouldn't be anywhere but the waiver wire.

Tight Ends
L.J. SMITH: (Low #1) LJ Smith is re-emerging as a fantasy-relevant TE. He's worth a start this week.
Brent CELEK: (Low #2) Celek is getting some playing time, but the return of LJ Smith hurts his opportunities.
Matt SCHOBEL: (Bench) He's gonna have to earn his fantasy points via special teams tackles.

Kicker
David AKERS: (#1) Eagles still haven't completely righted themselves in the redzone, so Akers remains valuable.

Defense/Special Teams
Team Defense/Special Teams: (High #1) If you own the Eagles D, this is the week you've been waiting for. Miami will be hard-pressed to get much going against the Birds and Fins QB John Beck is seeing his first NFL action this weekend.
IDP DL:Trent COLE has been quiet for a couple weeks, but he's getting the most playing time and should get a sack or two this weekend. Mike PATTERSON
is also playing some inspired football lately and should rack up some tackles again this week. IDP LB:Takeo SPIKES had a big game last week against the Skins and is the only Eagles LB worth owning.
IDP DB:Quintin MIKELL acquitted himself nicely in his first start at SS this season and will be busy getting after Jesse Chatman this weekend. Brian DAWKINS is starting to get back into game shape, so he might be worth a flyer this weekend. Sheldon BROWN has been steady all year, and should get some tackles in run support against the Dolphins.

PREDICTION:
Dolphins 13
EAGLES 33

News:  Eagles Week Ten Fantasy-Specific Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Eagles season, effectively, ended last weekend against the Cowboys. They may not have admitted it to the public, but they have to know it inside themselves. As such, I don't expect a whole lot from them this week.

Quarterbacks
Donovan McNABB: (#2) McNabb may be getting healthier, but his accuracy still suffers.
A.J. FEELEY: (Bench) Unlikely to see any game action.
Kevin KOLB: (Bench) Unlikely to see playing time.

Halfbacks
Brian WESTBROOK: (High #1) Westbrook is a must start, every week.
Correll BUCKHALTER: (Low #3) Don't be surprised if he gets a few more carries here on out.
Tony HUNT: (Bench) He's a possibility for next year or after, but only if Westbrook gets hurt.
Thomas TAPEH: (Bench) Tapeh is primarily a blocker and will see limited touches.

Wideouts
Kevin CURTIS: (Low #2) Curtis still seems to be the #1 option for McNabb and has a better chance of scoring than Brown.
Reggie BROWN: (Low #2) Brown is improving and putting up better numbers, but nothing to bank on.
Hank BASKETT: (#4) Baskett is the #3 guy now and getting some looks.
Jason AVANT: (#5) Oh where, oh where, has Jason Avant gone.
Tight Ends
L.J. SMITH: (#2) He's in a contract year, so he better start doing something soon.
Brent CELEK: (Low #2) He's leapfrogged Schobel and is getting a catch or two each game.
Matt SCHOBEL: (Bench) Cut him.

Kicker
David AKERS: (#1) Akers could have plenty of chances this week.

Defense/Special Teams
Team Defense/Special Teams: (#2) Clinton Portis could have a very big game this week and Campbell is quietly efficient. Don't start them unless you're desperate.
IDP DL: Trent COLE is the only DE who even has a chance to get to the QB.
IDP LB: I can't recommend starting any of the LBs at this point.
IDP DB: Sheldon BROWN has been solid this season and should continue. Quintin MIKELL gets the start for SS Sean Considine, who went on IR. Look for Mikell to be very active.

Prediction:
Eagles 16
Redskins 24

News:  Eagles Week Nine Fantasy-Specific Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Eagles defense did a fine job of shutting down ROY (aka, Adrian Peterson of the Vikings) last week. They were able to gain the lead and force the Vikes to the air, a place they clearly are not comfortable. The offense is starting to show some signs of getting its act together. They still suffer in the red zone, but McNabb is almost a year removed from his injury and seems to be playing with more confidence now. The Eagles take on the hated Cowboys in a Sunday Night tilt, one that should be quite interesting since Eagles fans will have had a good 12 hours of tailgating under their belts by opening kickoff. If the Eagles defense can limit the Cowboys offense, the Eagles have an excellent chance to win this game. They need to get pressure from someone other than just Trent Cole in order for that to happen, and that might just be wishful thinking. Good thing Andy Reid doesn't have anything else on his mind but preparing for the Cowboys! (Umm... nevermind.)

Quarterbacks
Donovan McNABB: (Low #1) The Cowboy secondary is vulnerable, and the Eagles could throw the ball 40+ times in this one. McNabb went 300+ last week with a teeder and no picks.
A.J. FEELEY: (Bench) Unlikely to see any game action.
Kevin KOLB: (Bench) Unlikely to see playing time.

Halfbacks
Brian WESTBROOK: (High #1) Mr. Versatile scored twice last week despite limited yardage totals. He should get yards and a score this weekend.
Correll BUCKHALTER: (#4) He got involved in the passing game last week, but still didn't do much to help fantasy owners.
Tony HUNT: (Bench) He's a possibility for next year or after, but only if Westbrook gets hurt.
Thomas TAPEH: (Bench) Tapeh is primarily a blocker and will see limited touches.

Wideouts
Kevin CURTIS: (Low #2) Curtis has the best chance of scoring, but only via a deep ball.
Reggie BROWN: (High #3) Brown seems to be developing a rapport with McNabb, but he's been limited in practice this week with a neck issue.
Hank BASKETT: (#4) Baskett is earning PT because of his downfield blocking and his size. If you are extremely desperate, take a flier on him.
Jason AVANT: (#5) Avant has been less involved lately and doesn't warrant a start, especially in light of a gimpy groin.
Greg LEWIS: (Bench) Greg Lewis? Seriously... Greg Lewis?

Tight Ends
L.J. SMITH: (High #2) He saw some playing time last week, and got open in the endzone, but didn't record a stat. Look for something, finally, from him this weekend.
Brent CELEK: (Low #2) He's catching a ball or two each week; he's got to score sometime soon.
Matt SCHOBEL: (Low #2) He's been starting the games recently, but not doing much else.

Kicker
David AKERS: (#1) Akers has been the Eagles biggest offensive threat this season. Keep starting him.

Defense/Special Teams
Team Defense/Special Teams: (#2) This might not be the week to start the Birds team D. Dallas has a high-powered offense and could explode on the Eagles.
IDP DL: Trent COLE has been the ONLY player able to pressure the QB. He's going to start getting doubled more so someone else will have to step up soon.
IDP LB: Takeo SPIKES is the only LB worth a start, and he's not setting the world on fire.
IDP DB: Sheldon BROWN gets thrown at when Lito is in the game and Brown also is good against the run.

Prediction:
Cowboys 31
EAGLES 22

News:  Eagles Week Seven Fantasy-Specific Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Eagles are coming off an ugly win against the Jets where the offense struggled, but the defense played quite well. The good news is that McNabb looked sharp, albeit more immobile than many expected. Brian Westbrook returned in a big way from injury. Reggie Brown showed some life and Kevin Curtis added a long TD. However the Eagles still struggled to get the ball in the endzone once they got to the red zone.

Quarterbacks
Donovan McNABB: (Low #1) McNabb is returning home (and to the team many think he might be playing for next fall), so expect a big day.
A.J. FEELEY: (Bench) Unlikely to see time.
Kevin KOLB: (Bench) Unlikely to see playing time.

Halfbacks
Brian WESTBROOK: (High #1) He does it all for this team, running and catching the ball. Start him every week.
Correll BUCKHALTER: (#4) He's getting a few carries and a catch or two, but nothing to warrant your attention.
Tony HUNT: (Bench) Hunt isn't getting opportunities, so leave him on your developmental roster.
Thomas TAPEH: (Bench) Tapeh is primarily a blocker.

Wideouts
Reggie BROWN: (#3) Brown finally emerged as the #1 receiver last week, although he couldn't add a teeder.
Kevin CURTIS: (#2) Curtis is the deep threat and the Bear secondary is banged up.
Jason AVANT: (Low #4) After a strong start, was held without a catch against the Jets.
Hank BASKETT: (#5) Baskett has turned into a heckuva blocker, but you don't get points for that.
Greg LEWIS: (Bench) Do you get ridiculed for having Lewis on your roster?

Tight Ends
L.J. SMITH: (Bench) It looks like Smith still isn't ready. He hasn't practiced all week.
Brent CELEK: (Low #2) He's shown the ability to catch the ball, so use him if you're desperate.
Matt SCHOBEL: (Bench) Watch out for splinters, Matt.

Kicker
David AKERS: (#1) Akers struggles in the Meadowloands, but is solid everywhere else.

Defense/Special Teams
Team Defense/Special Teams: (#1) The Bears are ranked near the bottom of the league offensively, so the Eagles team D is a strong start today.
IDP DL: Trent COLE should be able to get to Brian Griese a time or two this weekend.
IDP LB: Takeo SPIKES remains the only LB to count on regularly.
IDP DB: Sheldon BROWN might get some help with the possible return of Brian Dawkins, but he hasn't needed it as he's been a good play in the secondary.

Prediction:
EAGLES 27
Bears 13

News:  Eagles Week Six Fantasy-Specific Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
Who knows what to expect from the Eagles anymore. The only thing I know is that the Eagles are undefeated coming off a bye under Andy Reid and the Eagles have never lost to the Jets in their history. I also know the Jets are not playing well, so I'm thinking there are good things in store for Eagles fans this week.

Quarterbacks
Donovan McNABB: (#1) If he's not laying on his back, he should be a solid #1 FF starter for you.
A.J. FEELEY: (Bench) Not worth a roster spot.
Kevin KOLB: (Bench) He's only worth a roster spot in deep keepers.

Halfbacks
Brian WESTBROOK: (#1) He was a surprise scratch in week 4, but he's had a couple weeks of ret and will be back againt the Jets.
Correll BUCKHALTER: (Low #3) Buck looked good against the Giants, but Eagles abandoned the run too early.
Tony HUNT: (Bench) Not fantasy fodder at this point.
Thomas TAPEH: (Bench) Tapeh is on the field a lot as the FB, but won't get many carries or catches.

Wideouts
Reggie BROWN: (Low #3) One of these weeks Brown has to do something... could this be it?
Kevin CURTIS: (High #3) He's more of a threat than Brown right now.
Jason AVANT: (Low #4) Avant caused a mild stir early in the season, but he's been what we expected since then.
Hank BASKETT: (Bench) Baskett has disappeared from the Eagles game plan.
Greg LEWIS: (Bench) Greg who?

Tight Ends
L.J. SMITH: (Low #2) Smith should be back this week, but don't rely on him.
Brent CELEK: (Bench) Celek is a future prospect, but not a fantasy threat now.
Matt SCHOBEL: (Bench) Is he still on the team?

Kicker
David AKERS: (#1) Keep him in your starting lineup.

Defense/Special Teams
Team Defense/Special Teams: (#2) The team should do well this week against a fairly anemic Jets attack. Look for the defense to get some turnovers and limit the points.
IDP DL: Trent COLE is still the only consistent threat on the D-line.
IDP LB: Takeo SPIKES is active at LB and should rack up some tackles.
IDP DB: Sheldon BROWN should keep picking up the slack if Sheppard and Dawkins can't go.

Prediction:
EAGLES 26
Jets 9

News:  Eagles Week Four Fantasy-Specific Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Eagles offense broke out, in a big way, against the weak defense of the Lions. The Eagles defense held, for the most part, and feasted upon the Lions' O-line for 9 sacks. The Giants defense should provide a bit more resistance, but should still yield enough points to satisfy fantasy owners.

Quarterbacks
Donovan McNABB: (#1) McNabb certainly regained his confidence last week. It should continue.
A.J. FEELEY: (Bench) Not worth a roster spot for now.
Kevin KOLB: (Bench) He's still the #2 for now, but only worth a roster spot in deep keepers.

Halfbacks
Brian WESTBROOK: (#1) Be a little worried about Westbrook's abdominal strain, but he does have next week off to rest it. I think he'll play, and play well
Correll BUCKHALTER: (#4) Not worth a look yet, unless BWB is definitely out.
Tony HUNT: (Bench) Hunt got a mop-up TD last week. Don't expect the same this week.
Thomas TAPEH: (Bench) Tapeh is on the field a lot as the FB, but won't get many carries or catches.

Wideouts
Reggie BROWN: (#3) It's official... Brown is overrated. Sit him if you can.
Kevin CURTIS: (#2) Yes, I sat Curtis last week. Not a great move. Don't make my mistake.
Jason AVANT: (High #4) Avant came back to earth last week. Don't start him unless you're desperate.
Hank BASKETT: (Bench) Baskett has disappeared from the Eagles game plan. .
Greg LEWIS: (Bench) He's not really on your roster, is he?

Tight Ends
L.J. SMITH: (Bench) Smith is out this week. Bench him.
Brent CELEK: (Bench) Celek could get more involved over time, but not yet.
Matt SCHOBEL: (Low #2) He'll get the start, but don't get too excited.

Kicker
David AKERS: (#1) Keep starting him.

Defense/Special Teams
Team Defense/Special Teams: (#2) The Giants don't pose much of an offensive threat outside of Burress, who isn't 100% still. Start the team defense this week.
IDP DL: Trent COLE delivered 4 sacks last week, so I hope you took my advice and started him. He's still the only option on the D-line.
IDP LB: Takeo SPIKES is still your best option at LB.
IDP DB: Sheldon BROWN is healthy and playing well, and is the only player worth starting in the Eagles secondary.

Prediction:
Giants 13
EAGLES 24

News:  Eagles Week Three Fantasy-Specific Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Eagles had a perfect chance to get things going against Washington last week, but failed to do so. In turn, the team is dealing with other issues in light of a recent airing of an interview of Donovan McNabb. This appears to be a team in turmoil, and the surging Detroit Lions won't make things any easier on them. Look for the Eagles banged-up secondary to finally falter. The Eagles anemic offense won't be able to keep pace with the Lions.

Quarterbacks
Donovan McNABB: (#2) McNabb clearly isn't healthy yet. He's hesitant and timid on the field and is missing throws. Don't use him if you have a better alternative.
A.J. FEELEY: (Bench) He had another surgery on his broken hand to reset the pins. He's bench material.
Kevin KOLB: (Bench) It may not be long until Kolb gets some meaningful snaps.

Halfbacks
Brian WESTBROOK: (#1) Westbrook is the only Eagles player doing anything worthwhile, and he should continue to do so, although a slightly sprained knee is worrisome.
Correll BUCKHALTER: (#4) Not worth fantasy consideration unless Westbrook gets hurt, and he's on his way.
Tony HUNT: (Bench) Hunt was deactivated in week 2. Avoid him for now.
Thomas TAPEH: (Bench) Tapeh is on the field a lot as the FB, but won't get many carries or catches.

Wideouts
Reggie BROWN: (#3) There's a lot of talk in Philly about getting Brown more involved. Use him as your third receiver, but don't expect much.
Kevin CURTIS: (#3) Curtis has yet to really show the skills that got the Eagles excited in training camp. This might be the week.
Jason AVANT: (High #4) Avant is the only WR really performing well thus far, but he's not worth a fantasy start unless your league is deep.
Hank BASKETT: (#5) He'll still be on the field, but he has seen his time cut significantly by the emergence of Avant.
Greg LEWIS: (Bench) Lewis might see a ball or two, but should remain on your bench (or waiver wire).

Tight Ends
L.J. SMITH: (#2) Smith isn't able to get open like he did before his injury. Use him cautiously.
Brent CELEK: (Bench) Celek could get more involved over time, but not yet.
Matt SCHOBEL: (Bench) Bench material.

Kicker
David AKERS: (#1) Akers scored all of the Eagles points (4-4 FGs) against Washington. He's your #1 kicker every week.

Defense/Special Teams
Team Defense/Special Teams: (#2) This could be an ugly game for the Eagles defense, especially with their lack of pass rush and a banged up secondary. Sit them this week if you are able to.
IDP DL: I'd still give Trent COLE a shot, but the only Eagles DL doing anything is Mike PATTERSON.
IDP LB: Takeo SPIKES is the only one worth a look here.
IDP DB: Sheldon BROWN is healthy and playing well, and is the only player worth starting in the Eagles secondary.

Prediction:
Lions 27
EAGLES 20

News:  Eagles Week Two Fantasy-Specific Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Eagles come off a disheartening loss to the Packers where the special teams gift-wrapped the game for the opponent and the offense was more than happy to deliver it. Only the defense showed up to play. Some important things were learned, however. The Eagles returned to a blitzing style that will suit fantasy owners fine, although the defense will get burned for the big-hitter once in a while with their aggressive nature. On offense, we learned that Donovan McNabb is nowhere near 100%, however Brian Westbrook will see more touches as a runner than the past and Jason Avant has earned the confidence of his QB. I look for the Eagles to get things right against the Skins and put up some big numbers in their commemorative periwinkle blue and lemon chiffon uniforms on Monday night.

Quarterbacks
Donovan McNABB: (Low #1) Look for a little more confidence from McNabb this week, as the pass rush he faces will be less formidable than last week.
A.J. FEELEY: (Bench) Feeley was relegated to #3 QB in week 1, and it wouldn't surprise me if he was there in week 2 as well. Either way, don't use him.
Kevin KOLB: (Bench) Kolb served as the #2 QB last week, and should be there again this week. Leave him on your bench though.

Halfbacks
Brian WESTBROOK: (High #1) Westbrook was unable to find the endzone in week one, but still provided 131 all-purpose yards on 20 carries and 6 receptions. He should do even more this week.
Correll BUCKHALTER: (#4) Buck got 4 carries (for 5 yards) in week one. Leave him on the bench if you can.
Tony HUNT: (Bench) Hunt didn't see the field last week. He's only valuable right now as a prospect for a keeper league.
Thomas TAPEH: (Bench) Tapeh is on the field a lot as the FB, but won't get many carries or catches.

Wideouts
Reggie BROWN: (Low #2) Brown disappointed with only one catch in week one. He does well against the Skins, so give him another shot as your #2 FF WR.
Kevin CURTIS: (High #3) I was surprised that Curtis only had a couple catches (still for more than half a hunge). He'll do better this week.
Jason AVANT: (High #4) Avant had the lone TD and looked good in the loss. Consider him if you need a 4th WR.
Hank BASKETT: (#5) He'll still be on the field, but he has seen his time cut significantly by the emergence of Avant.
Greg LEWIS: (Bench) Lewis muffed the punt that led to Green Bay's only TD. Hopefully he's still in Big Red's doghouse.

Tight Ends
L.J. SMITH: (High #2) Smith seemed to get some looks early, but only managed 2 for 14. He's still a red zone threat, so start him if you own him.
Brent CELEK: (Bench) The rookie didn't see a pass and struggled as a blocker. Leave him be for now.
Matt SCHOBEL: (Bench) Bench fodder at best.

Kicker
David AKERS: (#1) Akers was solid, hitting on every opportunity (1-1 XP, 2-2 FGs Lg 47). Should be even more active this week.

Defense/Special Teams
Team Defense/Special Teams: (#1) The Eagles defense should get after the QB and rattle him some (which means fumbles and INTs). The good news is that most scoring systems don't account for special teams blunders. The bad news is that Reno Mahe returns as the PR, which means plenty of fair catches and no chance for TDs.
IDP DL: Keep riding Trent COLE, especially early in the season before he wears down. He could have a big day against the Skins. Surprisingly, the best Eagles DL last week was Mike PATTERSON as he racked up lots of tackles and added a sack. If you need to start a DT, then he's worth a shot.
IDP LB: Takeo SPIKES was solid in his Eagles debut and should be a week-in, week-out FF starter. Stay away from the others.
IDP DB: Lito SHEPPARD is out with a sprained knee, so the best bet will be Sheldon BROWN (who had a big week one performance). Also take a shot with Sean CONSIDINE as he should get plenty of chances at Portis and Betts. I'd keep Brian DAWKINS on the bench until he shows that he's back from his pre-season injury.

Prediction:
Redskins 13
EAGLES 30

News:  Eagles Week One Fantasy-Specific Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Eagles struggled through pre-season and travel to face an enigma of a team in Green Bay to open the regular season. Green Bay is led by the always-dangerous Brett Favre, yet he has question marks at RB (concussed rookie starting) and WR (Donald Driver nursing sore foot). The Green Bay line plays well enough to offset some of those questions. The Packer defense should be fairly solid. They've got pass rushers at each end and some playmakers at LB. They also feature a pair of shutdown corners. The Eagles will have to be creative and efficient on offense to take advantage of the Packers. On defense, the Eagles have to show they can stop the run, otherwise Brandon Jackson could start his campaign for rookie of the year in week one. Brett Favre will turn the ball over, so the Eagles must generate a pass rush and force some mistakes.

Quarterbacks
Donovan McNABB: (#1) McNabb made it through pre-season and appears to be ready to play on an ACL that was repaired less than a year ago. He has weapons to throw to, so he'll put up some positive fantasy points.
A.J. FEELEY: (Bench) Feeley has a broken hand, but it's not his throwing hand. He'd be the one to step in were Donovan not able to play.
Kevin KOLB: (Bench) After an impressive pre-season, Kolb will be relegated to clipboard duty as the emergency QB.

Halfbacks
Brian WESTBROOK: (High #1) Westbrook is fresh and ready to go. The Eagles insist they'll run the ball more, but BWB will still get the catches if Air Andy returns.
Correll BUCKHALTER: (#4) Buckhalter will spell Westbrook, but won't get more than a handful of carries.
Tony HUNT: (Bench) Hunt was impressive as a short-yardage guy in pre-season, but probably won't see the field much initially.
Thomas TAPEH: (Bench) Tapeh returns as the starting FB, but he won't be a fantasy factor.

Wideouts
Reggie BROWN: (#2) Brown has put up better numbers when McNabb has been out, so he'll have to show some rapport quickly.
Kevin CURTIS: (High #3) Don't be surprised if Curtis becomes McNabb's favorite WR target. The first play in each of the last two pre-season games has been a quick out to Curtis.
Jason AVANT: (Low #4) Avant earned the slot role with a strong pre-season, but he's still unproven when it matters.
Hank BASKETT: (High #5) He'll likely see nearly as many snaps as Avant, and he's shown he's got big-play ability.
Greg LEWIS: (#5) The thing about an Andy Reid offense is that everyone--even the 5th WR--sees the ball at some point.

Tight Ends
L.J. SMITH: (High #2/Low #1) Smith missed all of pre-season, so I'd work him back into your lineup slowly if you have the option.
Brent CELEK: (#3) The rookie really impressed and could force Smith (contract year) out the door.
Matt SCHOBEL: (Bench) He could see the ball, but he's not worth the risk to open the season.

Kicker
David AKERS: (Low #1) It's not Akers I'm worried about, it's his new holder (who still can't spin the laces away from the kicker).

Defense/Special Teams
Team Defense/Special Teams: (High #2) The good news is that they face a QB who will toss an INT or two, and some banged up skill position players, but they need to show they can stop someone on the ground. Use them if you must, but be wary right now. Special teams lost some appeal when Jeremy Bloom was released. Greg Lewis and Correll Buckhalter don't scare anyone as the returners.
IDP DL: The good news is that everyone is fresh. Jevon KEARSE and Trent COLE should be able to provide some pass rush, although Farve doesn't get sacked much (unless Michael Strahan can break a sack record).
IDP LB: Newcomer Takeo SPIKES should be active and rack up some tackles. If you're looking for a sleeper, consider using Omar GAITHER, who has the speed to make plays all over the field.
IDP DB: Favre will toss an INT or two, so it might be worth taking a shot on Lito SHEPPARD, Sheldon BROWN, or Brian DAWKINS (be careful; he missed most of pre-season with Achilles tendonitis).

Prediction:
EAGLES 27
Packers 23
